Toilet training is usually the first big milestone new Cavoodle owners tackle - and the good news is that Cavoodles, thanks to their intelligence, generally pick it up faster than many breeds when approached consistently.
A Realistic Timeline
Most Cavoodle puppies are largely toilet trained by 12-16 weeks of age, with occasional accidents continuing until closer to 6 months as bladder control fully develops. Every puppy is different - patience in the first few weeks pays off.
Set a Consistent Schedule
Take your puppy outside first thing in the morning, after every meal, after naps, after play sessions, and last thing at night - roughly every 1-2 hours for very young puppies. Use the same door and the same outdoor spot each time to build a strong association.
Reward Immediately
The moment your puppy toilets outside, praise warmly and offer a small treat within seconds - timing matters far more than the size of the reward.
Watch for the Signs
Circling, sniffing the floor, whining or heading towards the door are common pre-toileting signals. Catching these early and heading straight outside prevents accidents from becoming a habit.
Handling Accidents
Clean accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove scent markers that might attract repeat visits to the same spot. Never punish after the fact - puppies don't connect delayed punishment with the earlier accident, and it can create anxiety around toileting in front of you.
Overnight Training
