Cavoodle size is determined largely by the Poodle parent used in the cross - Toy or Miniature. Here's how the two compare.
Toy Cavoodle
Bred from a Toy Poodle parent, Toy Cavoodles are the smallest of the size variations, typically reaching 6-8kg and around 28-33cm at the shoulder as adults. Their small size suits apartment living and households wanting the most compact possible companion.
Mini (Miniature) Cavoodle
Bred from a Miniature Poodle parent, Mini Cavoodles are the most common size seen in Australia, typically maturing between 8-12kg and 30-38cm at the shoulder. This size offers a good middle ground - still small and manageable, but slightly sturdier for families with active children.
Temperament Differences
Size does not meaningfully change core Cavoodle temperament - both Toy and Mini Cavoodles are affectionate, people-focused and moderately energetic. Some anecdotal reports suggest very small Toy-sized dogs can be slightly more prone to "small dog syndrome" behaviours (bossiness, reactivity) if under-socialised, though this is more about individual upbringing than size itself.
Which Should You Choose?
Consider your household: families with young, boisterous children may find a Mini Cavoodle's slightly larger, sturdier build easier to manage day-to-day, while singles, couples or those in smaller apartments may prefer the compact size of a Toy.
