Crate training, done positively, gives your Cavoodle puppy a safe, calm space of their own and makes toilet training, travel and vet stays significantly easier.
Choosing the Right Crate
Pick a crate sized so your adult Cavoodle can stand, turn around and lie down comfortably - for a growing puppy, use a divider to keep the space appropriately sized as they grow, which also supports toilet training (puppies generally avoid soiling their sleeping area).
Step 1: Make It Inviting
Place soft bedding inside, along with a worn item that smells of home and family. Leave the door open initially and scatter treats inside so your puppy explores voluntarily.
Step 2: Short, Positive Sessions
Feed meals near, then inside, the crate. Begin closing the door for very short periods (a minute or two) while you're in the room, gradually extending the duration as your puppy stays relaxed.
Step 3: Build Independence Gradually
Once your puppy is comfortable with the door closed while you're present, begin briefly leaving the room, then the house, for short periods - always returning calmly, without a big fuss on your return.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the crate as punishment - this undermines it as a safe space
- Leaving a puppy in the crate too long without a toilet break
- Rushing the process - go at your puppy's pace, particularly in the first week home
Overnight Crating
Most puppies do well sleeping in a crate near your bedroom for the first few weeks, providing reassurance during the adjustment period while still building independent sleeping habits.
