Teach Gentle Handling First
Before your puppy arrives, talk with children about gentle touch, not pulling ears or tails, and giving the puppy space when eating or sleeping. Young children in particular benefit from practising "gentle hands" with a soft toy first.
Always Supervise Play
Even the gentlest breed and the best-behaved child benefit from supervision during play - puppies can nip during over-excited play, and children can unintentionally handle a small puppy too roughly.
Give Your Puppy an Escape Route
A crate or quiet space children are taught to leave alone gives your puppy somewhere to retreat when they need a break from busy family life - this genuinely reduces the risk of an overstimulated puppy nipping out of overwhelm.
Involve Kids in Care (Age-Appropriately)
Older children can help with feeding, gentle grooming or basic training under supervision, which builds a strong bond and teaches responsibility. Younger children can help choose toys or sit calmly during quiet cuddle time.
Set Consistent Household Rules
Make sure the whole family - kids included - are consistent about things like whether the dog is allowed on furniture, when they're fed, and basic commands, so your puppy isn't getting mixed messages.
