"Health tested" is one of the most common claims on Cavoodle breeder websites - but what should genuine health testing actually include?

DNA Health Testing

Reputable Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeding lines should be DNA tested for breed-relevant inherited conditions. Ask your breeder which specific tests were carried out, and whether they can share results.

Hip and Patella Screening

Physical veterinary screening of hips and patellas (kneecaps) in breeding dogs helps reduce the risk of joint issues being passed on - ask whether this screening has been done and by whom.

Annual Eye Certification

For Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeding lines specifically, annual eye certification by a veterinary ophthalmologist is considered best practice, screening for inherited eye conditions.

Cardiac Screening
