Good nutrition in the first 12 months has a lasting impact on your Cavoodle's growth, coat condition and long-term health. Here's what we recommend.
Choosing a Puppy Food
Look for a complete and balanced small-breed puppy food, ideally one that meets Australian Standard (AS 5812) or equivalent formulation guidelines. Small-breed formulas are sized and balanced appropriately for a Cavoodle's smaller jaw and faster metabolism compared to large-breed puppy food.
Feeding Frequency by Age
- 8-12 weeks: 3-4 small meals per day
- 3-6 months: 3 meals per day
- 6-12 months: 2 meals per day
- 12+ months: Transition to adult food, generally 1-2 meals per day
Transitioning Foods Safely
Every Chloe's Cavoodles puppy goes home with a small supply of their current food. If you plan to switch brands, do so gradually over 7-10 days, mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old to avoid digestive upset.
Foods to Avoid
Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and xylitol (found in some peanut butters and sugar-free products) well away from your puppy - all are toxic or dangerous to dogs.
Watching Body Condition
Cavoodles can be prone to weight gain in adulthood if overfed. You should be able to feel (though not necessarily see) your dog's ribs with light pressure, and see a visible waist from above. Speak with your vet about appropriate portion sizes as your puppy grows.
